English III
Overview:
English III is a survey course covering samplings of the major writings from pre-colonial America to the Civil War. Authors studied include Bradford, Edwards, Franklin, Paine, Jefferson, the Fireside Poets, Emerson, Thoreau, Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, and others. Students read then are expected to discuss and write about poems, essays, short stories and novels that are assigned. American writers from the Civil War to contemporary times studied include Whitman, Dickinson, Twain, Cather, Frost, Steinbeck, Welty, Robinson, Hemingway, Elliott, Pound, O’Connor, Masters, Porter, Faulkner, Hughes, Sandberg, Cummins, and Updike. Students are expected to read, discuss, and write about poems, essays, short stories and novels that are assigned.
